How to register a birth or death

If you wish to have a birth or death registered overseas, you may do so through the British Consulate in Santiago.

You will need to pay in Chilean pesos (only in cash) at the equivalent Consular Exchange Rate of Ch$900 = £1.00 (Updated on 29 September 2009 and still current as at this date). Credit cards are not accepted.

How to apply for a consular birth registration

Download and complete the attached application form to register an overseas birth. You may also obtain this form at the British Consulates.

Present the following documentation:

  • Child's original birth certificate.
  • Father's or Mother's original British birth certificate or Certificate of Naturalisation.
  • If father is the British citizen, he must produce his valid marriage certificate, unless the child was born after July 2006.
  • If mother is the British citizen and is married, she must present marriage certificate; otherwise, if single, certificate is not needed.
